Hamilton Restaurant Hambrgr Turns 5 - Interview & Giveaway
Happy 5 year anniversary to Hambrgr in Hamilton! Their King William location turns 5 on October 27th this year. We caught up with the owners of Hambrgr to talk about running their business and living in Hamilton. Check it out below!
Owners Mike and Paula have been married for 20 years and were originally hospitality professionals who had worked their way up the ladder for other companies. Friends and family began asking them if they considered opening their own restaurant. There were lots of opportunities in Hamilton. Once they checked out the city for themselves, they decided to go for it, and Hambrgr was born!
QUESTIONS:
What makes Hambrgr so special?
It’s a locally run, family owned business that supports other locally run businesses, with meat being sourced from Beverly Creek Rancher and brews being sourced from local Hamilton breweries.
It’s a casual place with non-commitment meals; you can eat there multiple times a week if you want.
They don’t want to be like their neighbour.
2. How does the team work?
Mike is a career chef and handles the cooking.
Paula is a fabulous host and handles the party at the front.
They employ local Hamiltonians.
3. What would you like the community to know about Hambrgr?
We’re not in it for the long hours; we like hosting the party.
We have lots of our original staff that we’ve had since day one. We enjoy building relationships.
Lots of people have approached us about buying Hambrgr and turning it into a chain but we don’t want to do that because we think that it would take away the special things that we put into it.
“Hamilton supports Hamilton.... It’s a micro-environment.... You’re dealing with soul here.”
4. What do you like most about living in Hamilton?
Mike: I love the vibe in Hamilton and the restaurant scene. I don’t see the big box stores and I love the entrepreneurial spirit. Hamilton supports Hamilton and I’m happy to be one of those supporters. It’s a micro-environment and it’s almost like Hamilton doesn’t need anybody else. You’re dealing with soul here.
Paula: I agree. I love supporting each entrepreneur. There’s no big boxes, and lots of smaller businesses. I like to support local shops and businesses and I admire and appreciate all of the entrepreneurs.
